Women’s rights is one of the hottest topics in global news right now. All around the world, women are standing up for themselves and pushing for things like equal pay, better healthcare, paid maternity leave, and more. Regardless of your gender, it can be overwhelming when considering the big challenges that lie ahead for women, and it can be difficult to know how to help. Here are some small things that you can do in your community to help improve women’s rights.
Stand up and say something when you see harassment or unfair treatment.
You likely witness harassment every day – maybe you see women whistled at on the street or talked to inappropriately at work or in a social setting. You also may be part of conversations where others talk about women inappropriately. Instead of sitting back and letting these things happen, stand up for women’s rights and say something impactful when you can. Obviously, you may not always be in a position where it is safe or practical to do this, but when you can, it can make a big difference.
Support brands and organizations that are empowering to women.
Before you make a purchase, research the organizations you are buying from to see if they employ women and support the equal treatment of women. There are many brands that even employ women in countries overseas where it is difficult for them to support themselves, which helps boost their personal economic stability. By supporting companies that take a stand against inequality for women, you help promote a culture where women’s equality is the norm.
Vote for politicians that support women’s equality.
One of the best things we can do to make work and social environments happier, safer, and fairer for women is by passing laws that require proper treatment of women. In order to get these laws passed, we need politicians that support these things. Before heading into the voting booth, be sure to research where politicians stand on women’s issues like equal pay, healthcare and abortion rights, help for women in the military, paid maternity leave, and more. It’s also particularly important to vote in congressional elections and local elections in addition to presidential elections, as these elected officials can also have a huge impact on women’s issues as well.
Volunteer with organizations that support women, particularly in developing countries.
Although women still face challenges in every country in the world, they particularly struggle in countries that are still developing, where working conditions are harsher and women don’t have the same access to healthcare that we do here. You can help by volunteering your time or donating money or helpful items to organizations that support women in these countries. There are hundreds of them, and a simple online search can help you find one that aligns with your beliefs and passions.
Although women’s rights have come a long way over the past few decades, we still have a very long way to go when it comes to getting full equality and access to resources for women. Just by doing these small things, you can make a big difference in the lives of women around the world.
